Top Ten Baseball Movies
By admin2 | May 5, 2008
10.Major League
A guilty pleasure for me, because I saw it when I was young and loved it.

9.Bang the Drum Slowly
“Brian’s Song,” for baseball. With Michael Moriarty as the star pitcher and Robert DeNiro as the dying catcher- which helped launch both careers. A truly touching film.
8.A League of Their Own
A great crowd pleaser and an important part of baseball history. It also gets extra credit for adding the line “There’s no crying in baseball” to the vernacular.
7.The Natural
Too sentimental a view of a slugger and the game for some, but it works for me. Based on the novel by Bernard Malamud and starring Robert Redford.
6.The Bad News Bears
The best baseball comedy, the perfect picture of Little League. Walter Matthau and Tatum O’Neal were perfect in their roles, and all of the foul-mouthed kids fit together beautifully.
5.The Rookie
The touching true story of Jim Morris (played very well by Dennis Quaid) who at the age of 35 realized his childhood dream of pitching in the Major Leagues. A very inspirational story and great family movie

4. Eight Men Out
John Sayles wrote and directed this movie, based on a book by Eliot Asinof, and does a great job of bringing the story’s complexity to the screen. A great cast lends well to a classic true story.
3.Pride of the Yankees
True story of New York Yankee Lou Gehrig who died too young after contracting Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis now known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.A real tear-jerker. You don’t have to be a Yankee fan to like this one.
2. Field of Dreams
Kevin Costner and company are great in this adaptation of W.P. Kinsella’s novel “Shoeless Joe.” It seems that everyone latches on to something different as their favorite part or as the message of the film. Like the game itself, this is a simple movie that also manages to be wonderfully complex.

1. Bull Durham
One thing about Kevin Costner, he sure gets the baseball movies right. He plays Crash Davis, a career minor leaguer sent to the Carolina League to teach golden boy Nuke LaLoosh (in a great performance by Tim Robbins) how to act like a ball player. Susan Sarandon plays love interest Annie Savoy.

Directed by Robert Clouse and starring Bruce Lee.
Everybody’s favorite Bruce Lee movie.
2. The Chinese Connection, 1972
Directed by Lo Wei and starring Bruce Lee. Original title: Fist of Fury.
Another Bruce Lee’s classic. It was hard to choose between this and Enter The Dragon for #1.
3) Drunken Master, 1979
Directed by Yuen Woo-Ping and starring Jackie Chan.
Made Jackie Chan a martial arts film star.Great action and humor.
4) The Shaolin Temple, 1982

Jet Li’s first film. At the times of filming Jet Li was the all-round wushu champion.
5) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 1999
Directed by Ang Lee and starring Michelle Khan, Chang Chen, Zhang Ziyi, Chow Yun-Fat.
This film won the most awards on the list, and effortlessly blends fantasy into its storyline.
6) Snake in the Monkey’s Shadow, 1982
Directed by Sum Cheung and starring John Chang.
If you like monkey style, snake style, and drunken style - this is the film for you.
7) Shaolin Master Killer, 1983
Directed by Lau Kar-Leung and starring Gordon Liu.
Considered by many fans of martial arts films to be one of the best.
8.) Ong Bak, 1992
Directed by Prachya Pinkaew and starring Tony Jaa.
Jaa’s breakout film, with the actor hailed internationally as the next major martial-arts star.
9) Fist of Legend, 1994
Directed by Gordon Chan and starring Jet Li.
Considered by many to be the best movie by Jet Li. It’s actually a remake of Bruce Lee’s The Chinese Connection.
10) The Legend of Drunken Master, 1994
Directed by Lau Kar-Leung and starring Jackie Chan.
Again, plenty of the hilarity that we expect from Jackie Chan, but the action is still great.

Top Ten Football Movies
By admin2 | April 29, 2008

1. Friday Night Lights
A very, very realistic look at the Permian Panthers football program back in the late 80s, and a complicated look into the pressure facing teenaged athletes. Spawned its own TV show.
2. Brian’s Song
The definition of a tearjerker, based on true events. James Caan and Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) star as teammates who overcome obstacles to become best friends. When Piccolo’s diagnosed with cancer, the two find strength and courage in each other. WaaaaahhhhH!!!!!
3. Rudy
A true story of ‘the little guy who could.’ Desperate to play for Notre Dame, Rudy triumphs over his own tiny-ness, bad grades, and poor athletic skills to make his dream come true. The inspiration for what I call the “Rudy Slow Clap” - a mocking way to make your friends feel like they’ve accomplished something.
4. Jerry Maguire
Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger star in this movie that spawned two catch phrases still uttered today: “You had me at hello,” and “Show me the money!”
5.The Longest Yard
The original, not the Sandler re-make version. Burt plays a former pro who ends up in a prison ruled by a prick warden. This movie was actually nominated for four Golden Globes and an Oscar.
6. Remember The Titans
Based on a true story (cue the tear-jerking) of Herman Boone, Denzel is awesome as the coach who forced integration on his football team only to have the team discover that friendship and loyalty know no colors. Football AND a message!
7. The Replacements
Keanu Reeves plays a quarterback who leads a bunch of replacements to victory in this kinda cheesy flick, “The Replacements.” Loosely (and I mean loosely) based on the 1987 NFL strike.
8. Invincible
The true story of Vince Papale,a part time bartender who loved football yet never dreamed of playing in the NFL. But when Dick Vermeil took over as head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, he opened up tryouts to anybody and everybody. Papale was talked into giving it a try and a the story unfolded into well, a perfect premise for a movie.
9. All the Right Moves
Tom Cruise plays a high school football player desperate to earn a college scholarship as a way out of his dying Pennsylvania steel-belt town. (Rudy meets…well, every college football story)
10. We Are Marshall
The true and sad story of how Marshall University was able to overcome a horrible plane crash took the lives of their football team and supporters on November 14, 1970.
